MURTAUGH (AP) — Deputies in south-central Idaho are investigating whether a farmer desecrated a cemetery when he uprooted trees and cleared other materials.

The Twin Falls County Sheriff's Office on Monday looked through debris cleared by Darrell Funk from the Artesian City Cemetery. The town existed for about three decades in the early 1900s.

Murtaugh Mayor Dee Hunsaker says he asked Funk to clear the site as part of a plan to improve the cemetery.

But nearby residents say gravestones were damaged and some of the trees served as grave markers.

Twin Falls County Prosecutor Grant Loebs says he's waiting for results from the investigation before deciding if misdemeanor charges should be filed.
