Boy, 14, charged with murdering his father
By Jen Wahl
CALDWELL — Prosecutors have charged a 14-year-old boy for killing his father.
The Canyon County prosecutor says Zachary Neagle, 14, is currently in custody and being held without bond. He's being charged with first degree murder. Authorities say the boy allegedly shot his father in the head with a rifle. "This was not a random act of violence," said Dave Wright, Caldwell Police lieutenant. "We believe it was a directed incident - and we're continuing to interview and investigate toward that angle." Caldwell Police Department Patrol Lt. Dave Wright says officers were dispatched to the home at about 3 p.m. on Saturday. The Canyon County coroner identified the victim as Jason Neagle, 33. "My first reaction was 'whoa' this stuff doesn't happen on this street," said Crystal Tijerina, a neighbor. Tijerina's fiance heard the gunshot. "He (Jason Neagle) is a quiet guy," she said. "He was always out cutting his yard." The crime scene is located at 1108 E. Ustick. Detectives said they feel they recovered valuable evidence at the scene. Preliminary information indicates this was a homicide and that the victim died of a single gunshot wound. Caldwell Police says officers have spoken to the other people who were in the home at the time of the shooting. Zachary Neagle is currently in custody at the Dale Hale Detention Center and will be arraigned on the charge, as an adult, on Wednesday. Pat Charlton, assistant superintendent with the Vallivue School District, says Neagle was an eighth grader at Vallivue Middle School. The school provided extra school counselors from other schools in the district to help anyway they can. Charlton says students have been fairly subdued at the school this week. As far as he knows, nothing like this has ever happened in the district. |
