Liquor Laws Affect New Year's Plans

The kick off to the new year is just around the corner and for many that means hitting up a local bar or restaurant to celebrate. But due to historic liquor laws and the day the holiday falls on this year some people won't get anything stronger than a beer or glass of wine.

New Year's Eve is a chance to celebrate the spirit of the season and for many that means doing it with a few of spirit filled beverages.

"Amongst the men it's mostly just shots and beers but among the women it's a lot of Midori Sours, a lot of blended drinks," Elliott's Sports Pub and Grill Bartender Pete Romo told CBS 2 News.

This year the holiday falls on Sunday, so that means if you live in Nampa you can still order a beer or a glass of wine, but if you want to get a shot, you're going to have to go somewhere else to do it.

"Currently in the City of Nampa there are no liquor sales allowed on Sundays," Nampa City Spokeswoman Sharla Arledge told CBS 2 News.

Bars and restaurants in Canyon County can only serve beer and wine on Sundays, a rule that reflects a 1947 state law. While individual cities and counties can change the Sunday liquor law, Nampa City says they haven't had any formal requests to do so.

"We had one request from one bar saying well is there any way that we could just sell tickets, make it a private party, and give alcohol away? But the code really is clear on that as well and your not allowed to do that according to city code," said Arledge.

Romo says that Elliott's Sports Pub and Grill in Nampa loses $4,000 to $5,000 a month in liquor sales on Sunday's because of the law. And he expects New Year's Eve party goers will choose to go somewhere else this year.

"As the hours go on toward midnight we'll probably start losing most of that crowd to Boise and Meridian," he said.

And that's a mixture the Nampa bar doesn't like to serve when it comes to ringing in the new year.

This week the Twin Falls City Council voted to change their Sunday liquor laws in order to sell on New Year's Eve. In Ada County it's already legal to sell liquor by the drink in bars and restaurants on Sunday.
