BURLEY, Idaho (AP) — A southeastern Idaho man was arraigned on a first-degree murder charge in connection to the shooting death of 25-year-old Liopoldo Amescua.

Police arrested 22-year-old Gerry Salgado of Aberdeen on Monday.

Salgado did not enter any pleas when he was arraigned Tuesday in 5th District Court on three additional charges, including aggravated battery, grand theft and enhancement for the use of a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony.

Emergency crews responded Saturday to a call from 46-year-old Estella Castro, who said her boyfriend had been assaulted and their vehicle stolen at vacant area north of the Raft River Store near the town of Malta in Cassia County.

Amescua was found dead that night.

Police have said the couple had an arranged meeting with Salgado.

Amescua, of Rupert, died from a gunshot wound to the head, 5th District Judge Roy Holloway said while reading the charges against Salgado in court.

Holloway also detailed Castro's injuries, saying she was struck or hit, suffering bruises and severe lacerations, and several of her teeth were knocked out.

She is being treated at Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello for non-life-threatening injuries.

During the arraignment hearing, the judge asked Salgado if he was employed.

"Well, not no more," said Salgado, who was in jail shackles and kept his head down in court.

Salgado has requested a public defender to represent him. An Oct. 2 preliminary hearing has been scheduled.

The judge granted a request from Cassia County Prosecutor Al Barrus that Salgado be held without bail because of the murder charge.

Barrus said his office has 60 days after filing the charges against Salgado to determine whether to recommend the death penalty, but he expects the decision could be made by the end of the week.

"We have a lot of gaps that have yet to be answered," Barrus said.
