BOISE - A missing Boise hunter missing since Wednesday appears to be OK.
Authorities were looking for Joel Derek Emerson, who left Boise at about 5 a.m. on Wednesday. Police say Emerson was riding a 1989 Red/Blue Honda 250 XR and stated he was going to go hunting up 8th Street into the foothills above Boise. Emerson, a Boise State student, apparently spent the night under a tarp and late on Thursday was able to get into cell phone reception and called his girlfriend saying he was OK. "Hey babe, it's me, I'm in Idaho City," Emerson said in a voice mail on his girlfriend's phone. "Got stuck in the rain last night." His friends and family had searched all night and then waited all morning as search and rescue combed the area. Emerson's girlfriend, Ali Robertson, breathed a sigh of relief when she heard his voice. "He'll get a little lecture, but we'll all give him hugs," Robertson said. Emerson was reunited with his family around 6:00 Thursday night. He said spending the night in the woods was an adventure. "The way I survived was actually starting the bike intermittingly, um you only get about an hour and half, two hours of sleep because you couldn't leave it running," Emerson said. He says he wasn't worried and had no idea crews were out searching for him.
"I am glad there is a lot of people that love me, you know, and that got put into motion," he said.
