TIGARD, Ore. - A 34-year-old man is accused of trying to lure a 9-year-old girl online to have sex with him, federal agents said.

Documents show the suspect, Darrick Haaby, allegedly began e-mailing the girl (then eight years old) in September to have sex with him. Documents also showed that Haaby and the father of the alleged victim have known each other for 12 years.

While the girl said no, the documents show Haaby wouldn’t take no for an answer.

One of his first alleged e-mails said, “Do you promise to have sex with me? Please answer then erase this letter and don’t tell anyone.”

According to a federal affidavit, for about a month Haaby repeatedly pursued the girl through e-mail despite her reluctance and saying no.

At one point agents said Haaby even used her sister to try luring the girl. “Your sister will also start going through the same thing you will … when she is ready, I may have her be with me,” he allegedly wrote.

Around the girl’s ninth birthday, agents said Haaby used money to entice her, writing, “You have to choose one of these or you will not get that 20 dollars and I may never talk to you again.”

Investigators said the girl’s father eventually discovered the e-mails.

With law enforcement posing as the girl online, they agreed to have sex.

Haaby allegedly devised a plan to get the girl alone then wrote her father asking, “I was wondering if it would be cool with you if I come and take her out for an ice cream or something this Saturday.”

No one was home at the Haaby family’s Tigard apartment Monday, but parents at the family-friendly complex said they are shocked by the allegations.

Haaby is facing federal charges of essentially online enticement, but he has no other prior criminal record. Haaby is married and has a child of his own.

Currently, Haaby is in jail, but Friday he has a detention hearing to determine whether he’ll remain in custody pending a possible trial.
