Veterans Day Celebration
By Alana Brophy
BOISE - Veterans, families and friends came together to celebrate Veterans Day.
In Boise, it was standing room at the Idaho State Veterans Home. Hundreds of people showed their support at a ceremony in which 10 veterans and volunteer leaders received the Spirit of Freedom award. The award was originally started by Senator Mike Crapo to acknowledge service by local veterans and volunteers. Recipients include Vicotr Paul, Chester Smith, H. Mel Napier, William Reed, Carlo Fenicottero, S. David Shepard, Vernon Perkins, James Metzer, Debra Staup and James T. Woychick. The cermony showed the community outpuring and support for all troops, something Vietnam veteran Jimmy McCary says has changed since he returned home. "I made a mistake and wore my uniform, it was during '69 with all the riots in San Francisco, and it was walk on your own side of the street sort of thing," says McCary. He also says the outpouring of support today makes him feel like what he did was worth it. |
