City clerk accused of embezzling more than $170K

BANCROFT, Idaho (AP) — Prosecutors are accusing a former city clerk in eastern Idaho of embezzling more than $170,000 during a five-year span.

Caribou County Prosecutor Gregg Haney he has filed two felony theft charges against Joell Thompson as part of an investigation that began in February. She is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 7.

Haney says an investigation was launched after Thompson failed to meet with an auditor during the city of Bancroft's annual audit.

The first felony count of grand theft covers the period between 2004 and 2006. The second charge covers the period between 2007 and 2008.
