Dozens of voters turned around at polls

CALDWELL - All of the signs point voters to the polls. But once they step inside, Canyon County residents like Melissa Bate found they weren't heading in the right direction.
"We went to the place that was on our registration card and it turned out to be the wrong place," Bate said. That's because Bate and other residents like Miguel Villegas, live in an area where they vote in one precinct for city elections and another for statewide elections. "But this is city so I had to go figure it out over there by the courthouse," Villegas said. Dixie Parker, an election worker, says one of her jobs is to direct confused voters to the correct polling place. "But it's worked out in the end and we've been able to get them their ballot and they've been able to vote," Parker said. Brad Jackson, chief deputy clerk with the Canyon County Elections Office says they don't send out new voting location notifications because postage is too expensive. "We not only pay to mail those out, but we pay a significant fee for all of those that are returned," Jackson said. But Bate did not give up. "It was a little frustrating but everybody was really nice about it," she said. "So we just re-directed so that we could vote." And finally cast her ballot.
