School vaccine clinics make a comeback
By Kiersten Throndsen
MOUNTAIN HOME - Local health officials say they're going to try school vaccine clinics again but they warn, as of now the largest school-districts in Ada County are not included on the list.
Brandy Chavez's 6-year-old daughter hasn't got an H1N1 vaccine but it's not by choice. "We happened to be on Wednesday and they ran out before Wednesday," she said. Her daughter's Meridian elementary school was all set to offer a vaccine clinic until health officials say they had no more vaccine to give out. "I thought it was bad that they offered it to the schools for free and then they didn't have enough," said Chavez. Now, Central District Health officials say they're ready to offer school vaccine clinics again but only in Mountain Home. "We haven't done anything with the school district there so that's what we want to do," said Dave Fotsch, spokesman for CDHD. During the day and half schools offered clinics in Boise and Meridian 7,100 students got the vaccine. But some of those kids, ages 9 and under, need two doses and many may still be waiting for the second dose. When asked why health officials don't finish the vaccine clinics they started in Meridian and Boise first before hitting up another school district, Fotsch responded by saying: "the Meridian and the Boise School Districts are the largest school districts in the state and I can tell you flat out we don't have enough vaccine to vaccinate all those kids right now." Fotsch says they're trying to cover as much ground with the school vaccine clinics as they can and they want to get back into Meridian and Boise schools but they need a lot more vaccines first. Chavez says she'll just have to wait to see if that actually happens. "Maybe, if they offer it again we'll look into it," she said. Fotsch says parents with children nine years and younger who don't want to wait for school vaccine clinics again can always visit one of the public pods. He says the recommended two doses provide full immunization but one dose still provides children with partial immunization against H1N1 virus. The vaccine clinics will open in Mountain Home on Tuesday. Health officials are hoping to expand the clinics into Kuna schools next. |
